Congrats CPB on joining the 1000 point club! Great effort by the Govs tonite against a pretty good shooting team from Morehead. We will have to crank it up a few notches to upset the Belmont boys but I think we can get it done! LGP!
Good point, YankeeVol. That would be an understatement. Tale of the tape: Taylor held to 8 points and out rebounded 46-30, and no answer for Windler, who had eight 3 pointers (8-15).
Fundamental basketball usually wins - defense, rebounding and court awareness/discipline.
You can get away with lapses against weaker opponents (e.g. Morehead) but not against Belmont or Murray. A microcosm of the season was the Quartefinal win vs. Morhead. Great intensity and build a big lead in the first half, then allow them back into the game in the second. Inconsistent intensity and focus.
We were the fourth best team in the conference this year and the results support it. Jacksonville State, who had Murray on the ropes last night and beat them and Belmont during the regular season, is a notch above the Govs this year. I know we beat them on the road, which was a big win, but it's the overall body of work that matters.
To that point, I don't think we'll get an NIT bid. Even if the OVC gets an at large bid for the loser of Belmont-Murray, Jacksonville State would be next in line for an NIT bid. Realistically, same as last year - CBI or CIT.
In looking to the future - we're losing a lot of Senior talent going into next years. I'm not current on status of recruiting, but need an A level class to be competitive again. Let's hope for the best.
I agree with all what samap80 said, good recap. What I would add is the amazing progress that the current coaching staff made in 2 years, incredible. Granted that after the top four teams, the OVC very weak, but APSU was down there with all of them for years prior to arrival of Coach Figger. I suspect it will be hard to find the level of talent that they are losing this year, but they did it last year.
I am not sure how Murray continues to get the amazing guard play year after year which won the tourney for them. Belmont had more talent and better coaching but for Morant who is head and shoulders above all there. It will be interesting to see how he does in the NBA.
