2013 OVC Champions - Governors Tennis
Governors Club Members:
It has been six months since I started at Austin Peay State University. I have learned very quickly how fortunate I am to be serving as the Athletics Director. Six months of listening, assessing, and evaluating history, traditions, policies, procedures, relationships, and opportunities. In response to this assessment, I have worked with different constituencies to draft a comprehensive Strategic Plan for this Athletics Department: a blueprint for the future of this program.
As a result, we have started launching a number of new initiatives that we feel will help Austin Peay’s Athletics Department to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. One such initiative is to create a communication tool to speak effectively and frequently to all of our Governors Club Members.
We want to make you a stakeholder in our daily decisions. We want to let you know what we are working on, what we value, where we are going, and how your support is changing the face of Austin Peay. On a monthly basis, you will receive this communication from me. At the end of each school year, you will receive an Annual Report. This will review our financials, our successes, our opportunities, and our vision. This will evolve and be refined over time, but this will be the starting point for making you a partner in the future of this great University.
Great things are happening at Austin Peay! Another great initiative in process is the construction of our new football stadium. You can view the construction process by clicking on the following link: www.apsu.edu/stadium We are excited about what this project means for this University and our Clarksville community. In future communications, I will talk about a few unique features of this project and how they could impact you.
Our most important initiative will always be academic success. I am proud to report that that 53% (174) of our student-athletes had above a 3.0 cumulative grade point after the fall semester. Our combined overall and cumulative grade point average is a 3.04. Twenty six of our student-athletes had a 4.0 grade point average. Congratulations to our student-athletes for maintaining a Culture of Excellence in the classroom.
Below is a list of other initiatives in summary that we are launching:
Branding: A team of alumni, campus partners, students, and corporate partners have been working to assess our current brand position – from marks and logos to communication strategies. Our primary objective is improve our overall brand position in our community through effective communication strategies and through a disciplined system of using our marks and logos. More information on this initiative will be coming in the next few months as we close out our process.
Expanded Golf Outing Format: On June 27, we will have our Governors Golf Classic—presented by Swan Lake, Clarksville Country Club, and Budweiser. This event will have a simultaneous shotgun start at two golf courses (i.e., Swan Lake and Country Club) at 10:30 a.m. and will end at the Country Club with strolling dinner/reception for golfers, friends, spouses, and corporate partners. Entertainment has been hired for the evening event. We are looking to make this the premier golfing event in Clarksville.
Community Marketing Initiatives: If you have been at games this year, you have seen a shift in our marketing strategies. We are working hard to pull in local youth sport and social organizations to experience Austin Peay Athletics. We have developed a detailed and comprehensive marketing plan and demographic profile of our community. Using this vision and information, we are attempting to make Austin Peay the epicenter of our community identity and experience. If you would like to know more about this, please call and talk to me about this initiative.
Spring Football Game: On April 26, we will be hosting our annual Spring football game at Fort Campbell. We have been looking for opportunities to build a strong relationship with Fort Campbell, and we believe that this is the opportunity. More information on this event will be coming in the next few weeks as we finalize the calendar of events leading up to the game.
Governors Club Restructuring: We are restructuring Governors Club to become an organization that is always looking at growth and expansion. In order to meet the challenges of tomorrow, we have to prepare our organization today to look at opportunities to grow. We are expanding our structure to include other satellite groups, which could include young professionals, military, students, and alumni.
These are only a few of the great things happening at Austin Peay. We hope that you find this communication helpful. As we move forward, I will go into greater depth on what these changes mean for our Athletics Department. I am excited to make you a partner in this process. My door is always open for partners who want to work with me meet the challenges of tomorrow.
Thank you for your time and attention.
