Austin Peay State University right-handed pitcher Daniel Tenholder was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 19th round of the Major League Baseball's 2009 First Year Player Draft, Wednesday. He was the 573rd overall selection in the draft.
Tenholder, a Clarksville native, received 2009 All-Ohio Valley Conference second-team recognition after leading the OVC with nine saves. It was the second consecutive season he received second-team all-conference recognition. He posted his nine saves in 2009 despite having only 10 save opportunities during the season. Tenholder was 3-1 as a reliever and struck out 41 batters in 46.0 innings pitched. He was the first APSU pitcher to record more than five saves in two seasons and now has a school-record 20 saves during his three-year career – ranking third-most all time in Ohio Valley Conference history.
He is the 26th APSU player selected through MLB's First-Year Player Draft all-time and it is the third consecutive year Austin Peay has had a player selected in the draft.
Austin Peay's Daniel Tenholder signed his contract and became a member of the Oakland A's, the team's Web site reported Tuesday.
Tenholder, the Govs' junior closer, was taken in the 19th round of last week's MLB First-Year Player Draft.
He was the 573rd pick on the second day of the draft.
Tenholder was one of 14 players the A's signed Tuesday, the highest being right-handed pitcher Murphy Smith, a 13th round selection out of Binghamton.
Tenholder hasn't been officially designated to one of the A's minor league teams.
There's a good chance he'll either start with the team's rookie league squad in Phoenix, which starts its season on June 22, or for the Vancouver Canadians in Short-Season Class A that gets under way on June 20.
Tenholder was named second team All-OVC the past two seasons and led the league each year in saves with nine this past season, out of 10 chances, and 11 in 2008.
Tenholder finished his career at APSU 7-4 with a 3.24 ERA.
Tenholder's selection makes it the third straight year an APSU baseball player has been drafted and Tenholder is the 26th all-time to be selected.
